Powhatan is just south of the James River, and west of Richmond. The county is 262 square miles and has a population of 28,601. Although the population has doubled in the past 20 years, it is still mostly a rural area, especially beyond Route 522. Route 711 is a beautiful drive along the James River.
Interesting trivia: An assessment in 1850 valued the land in Powhatan at an average of $10.12 per acre.
